Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, «If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.» They answered him, «We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?» Jesus answered them, «Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. (John 8:31-36)
The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, «Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.» Then he said, «Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.» He replied to him, «Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.» (Luke 23:40-43)

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. (Is 58:6-8)
