  • All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, 6 to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. (John 1, 3-9)

  • And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (John 3:19-21)

  • And Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him, «Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness.» (Luke 22:52-53)

  • The covetous man is never satisfied with money, and the lover of wealth reaps no fruit from it; so this too is vanity. (Eccl 5:9)

  • Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to him, «I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me.» (Luke 4:5-7)

  • Rather, their thoughts were rendered dull, for to this present day the same veil remains unlifted when they read the old covenant, because through Christ it is taken away. (2 Cor 3:14)

  • For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains. (1 Tim 6:10)

  • Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof. (Sir 20:29)

  • He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Matt 6:24)
